1. Naqsh-e-jahan square

The construction of this square dates back to 17th century. This big rectangle is located between two large mosques, a historical bazaar and a big building called “qeysarie Gate”. Additionally, there are about 200 shops all around the square, where you can buy most beautiful and unique handcraft items of the city. The center of square is a vast and open space, in which local people and visitor can spend a nice time.

2. Vank cathedral

The second must be seen historical site in Isfahan is Vank Cathedral which was constructed in 17th century and is located in New Jolfa. The church displays a beautiful combination of Armenian and Safavid architecture as a dome in it, is similar to domes of Iranian mosques in Safavid era. The interior of the church, walls, ceilings and other parts are decorated with most beautiful paintings. There is also a museum in the complex which displays the detailed life of Isfahan’s Armenian community. Visiting Vank Cathedral, you will be surprised of all the beauty!

3. Chehel Sotoun

Chehel Sotoun Palace is the other historical site of Isfahan which you must never ignore while visiting the beautiful city. In the entrance of the building you will see 20 pillars, when reflected in the water appear to be 40 and make an exquisite scene; and the name which means “forty pillar” is inspired by this beautiful scene! Inside the palace you will find all parts of the walls covered by murals from unknown artists.

4. Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque

One of the most beautiful and known historical sites of Isfahan, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is located in the eastern side of Naqsh-e-Jahan Square. The exterior surface of the mosque has a unique blue which can’t be found in other parts of the world. Built in 1602-1619, the Sheikh Lotfollah actually was made as a private mosque for the royal family. Visiting this site will be the best part of your travel to Isfahan.

5. Menar Jonban

Built in 14th century, Menar Jonban is a very different and unique historical site of Isfahan. The site is basically shrine of a Sufi called Amu Abdollah Soqla. The building in the site, has two pillars made by bricks which are shakable. The interesting fact about these two pillars is that if you shake one of them, the other one will shake too! Isn’t it worth of watching?

6. Si-o-Se pol

Si-o-Se pol which is also called Allahverdi Khan Bridge, is one of the 11 bridges of Isfahan, but due to different architecture, size and location, it is the most known bridge of the city. The bridge has made live nights for the city, an environment that attracts local people and also tourists from Iran and all world. It is the real symbol of Isfahan!

Built in first years of 17th century, Si-o-Se pol, is both longest bridge of the city and also the biggest construction of the country made on water. This bridge is a must be seen part of Isfahan, though try to visit it at night, as it is in the most beautiful condition.

7. Khaju Bridge (Pol-e-Khaju)

Pol-e-Khaju is another famous bridge of Isfahan which is located on the east of Si-o-Se pol. Khaju, as well as being a Bridge on a river, functions as a beautiful building which is decorated with tile works and fantastic paintings. In the era of Safavid, Khaju Bridge was one of the most beautiful bridges of the world, as it has a unique architecture and fabulous artistic works, though it was basically used as a weir.

The bridge which was made in 17th century by the order of Shah Abbas II, is still working.

8. Shah Mosque

Shah Mosque is the most important historical mosque of Isfahan. It is a masterpiece of architecture, tile works and carpentry. The Mosque is selected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Built in 17th century, Shah Mosque is located in the south side of Naqsh-e-Jahan Square. Beside the artistic works, this huge mosque has a very creative architecture; the acoustic properties and reflection of voices at the central point under a dome is an amusing aspect for many tourists. No doubt, Shah Mosque will be a must be seen and not forgettable part of your trip to Isfahan.
